Like any child, trips to Walmart meant we could explore the toy section and discover all the latest offerings. My sister and I never missed an opportunity to admire the beautiful Barbie dolls. Once we were done, my sister would grumble as I dragged her from the Barbie aisle at Walmart to check out the sewing machines just to ogle at them. Even then, I understood what they could do and what they were capable of. I ended up with a small toy machine to create outfits for my dolls, but once it started giving me trouble, it was tossed into the toybox never to be seen again. After that, I believed that I needed to be able to draw to pursue a career in fashion design, leading me to a path in styling instead. While my journey is unique to me, and I appreciate my own trajectory, I sometimes wish I had someone to tell me that drawing wasn’t a requirement. In 2020, I decided to stop buying new clothes for myself and started making them instead. What I discovered wasn’t just a means to generate income or create my dream wardrobe; it reignited a passion inside me, as if I was preparing for a fashion show event. Sewing just clicked. Putting the pattern pieces together felt as natural as breathing. I realized right away that this was what I was born to do. I even thought about how I could showcase my creations at local events in Huntington, WV, under the name Miss Calluna.
The Name
Calluna and Erica are both types of heather, two plants from the same family. My name, Erica, inspired my branding, and I wanted something that felt connected to me, yet not too obvious. Calluna provided the ideal connection: it subtly references my name while adding an element of softness and elegance. It embodies the romantic, refined spirit that I infuse into every design. As we prepare for our upcoming fashion show event in Huntington, WV, Miss Calluna Atelier truly reflects that essence: personal, intentional, and deeply rooted in beauty.
My Dream
I dream of dressing women of every body type and background, helping them feel on top of the world at events like the fashion show event in Huntington, WV. Clothes have the power to change people; just look at how they transformed Cinderella. Fashion creates controversy, makes statements, and I aspire to be part of the message one conveys when they present themselves to the world. Whether it’s pageantry, formal events, or the glamour of red carpets and stage costumes, I want to ensure others feel truly seen—not just on the outside, but also for who they are inside. Life is fleeting, so show them who you are and let your statement shine, much like the essence of Miss Calluna does in every appearance.
